In January 2003, TIFR Women's Cell decided, in response to requests from many staff-members, to work towards setting up a child care center in TIFR campus.
A survey was conducted and based on the feedback received from about 60 TIFR members,
it was noted that at that time 26 children were in immediate need for such a centre.
The Women's Cell set up a committee, with three members of Women's Cell and seven other members, which looked into various aspects of starting such a facility in the TIFR campus.
The members visited various existing Child Care Centres such as Kilbil (BARC), IDBI Child Care Centre, Day care centre (TISS), Chunmun (Railways) and Podar Jumbo kids (Podar Education Society) to gather inputs.
Various other institutions, such as Nirmala Niketan and SNDT college were also consulted.
A Child Care Centre was started in TIFR, temporarily in two Panini flats on June 16, 2003, with generous support from TIFR and DAE authorities.
A new unit with appropriate facilities and equipment was created on the ground floor of Brahmagupta building, in the Colaba campus.
This was inaugurated by Dr. Anil Kakodkar in November 2004.
Currently about 40 children avail this facility.
