The Department of Chemical Sciences (DCS) was formerly known as Chemical Physics Group (1967-'97) or Nuclear, Electron Magnetism (NEM) Group (1953-'67). Some of the current research activities of the department are directly traceable to the early experimental research in NMR, ESR and Magnetism of molecules and building instruments for the same.

The activities of the department have steadily expanded over the years and diversified to several research areas in the frontiers of chemical and biochemical sciences. A large number of state-of-the-art techniques, some of them are home-built, are being used in these research activities.

The department is always on the look out for bright young scientists from all over the world who could strengthen the existing research areas and also initiate newer areas of research in the department.

The Department of Chemical Sciences conducts regular graduate training programme in chemistry for the research scholars of the Institute, and students can obtain Ph.D. degree in chemistry from TIFR (recognized by the University Grants Commission). Regular lecture courses and projects in various subjects are offered in the department to the research scholars of the Institute.

The Department organizes regular seminars by members/students and visitors generally in every Monday evening. Several important National and International symposia and conferences in various frontier areas are also organized by the Department.
