"Study of radiation background for 0νββ in 124Sn" by Neha Dokania TIFR, PLF.


 Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is predicted to occur in extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. Observation of 0νββ would provide evidence for lepton number violation, Majorana nature of neutrinos and can result in a measurement of the effective neutrino mass. The cryogenic tin bolometer TIN.TIN (The India-based Tin detector) to search for 0νββ in 124Sn is under development at TIFR. Given the rarity of the 0νββ process (T 0ν 1/2 > 1025 years), low levels of background 1019 years for the half-life of double beta decay of 94Zr to the excited state has been reached using TiLES. Future plans to perform experiments like rare alpha decays to excited states of the daughter nuclei will also be discussed.
