Message from the Dean, Graduate Studies

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, India's premier institution for research in fundamental science and mathematics, has had a vigorous graduate programme for over two decades. Over this period, our graduate students have carried out their research here and obtained their degree from the University of Mumbai. (Students at our external Centres similarly obtained their degree from a University in their region.)

After completing their degree, TIFR students have been doing extremely well on the international scene, with many of them immediately taking up visiting positions at the world's leading scientific institutions and bringing credit to themselves and to us. Today a large fraction of our graduates hold faculty positions at various universities and institutes, both in India and abroad. Others have taken their expert knowledge and skills to industry.

In recognition of our achievements and experience, the UGC has awarded us the status of a Deemed University and henceforth we will be granting our own degrees. From our established record, it is quite clear that our degrees will be among the most highly rated in the world. That, and nothing less, is our aim.

The large majority of TIFR students join us after their Master's degree and enrol in our Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme. However, in some areas we also offer an M.Sc. (Master of Science), or an integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D., and this may grow in the future. Our programmes are advertised widely each year, and we take in talented students from all corners of the nation as well as abroad.

We welcome enquiries from intending students and will do our best to respond to each one. Answers to many frequently asked questions can already be found on our website. In addition to students, all those who support the cause of excellence in scientific research, which is our guiding light, are our friends and partners. We are always happy to hear from them.

With best wishes,

Prof. G. Krishnamoorthy
