Convener for the National Facility for High Field NMR at
TIFR, Mumbai (2002-till date)
I
have played a major role in the establishment, running and the academic
activities of the National Facility for High Field NMR, at TIFR. The Facility
was established in 1983, with the support from Department of Science and
Technology, Govt. of India and TIFR, and then it had the High Resolution 500
MHz NMR spectrometer, the only one of its kind in the country. It served
immensely, the needs of the scientific community in the country. Keeping in
tune with the growing demands and the technological developments, the
facilities have been regularly upgraded at the Facility. In 1995, a 600 MHz NMR
spectrometer was added, an 800 MHz spectrometer was added in 2006 and in 2009 a
700 MHz machine has been installed. Currently, I am the convener of this
Facility. The Facility has played a major role in training the NMR community of
this country in theory, practice and use of the NMR technique, by organizing
regular workshops and conferences.
My major area of research is at the Chemistry-Biology
interface, and in particular, nuclear magnetic resonance and its application
to structure, dynamics and interaction of biological macromolecules. In the
past I have worked on lipids and membrane organization, DNA duplexes, triplexes
and their specific interaction with proteins. My present research covers
development of NMR pulse sequences, development of software algorithms for NMR
data analysis, protein-DNA recognition, structure and dynamics of DNA quadruplexes, protein folding, structure and dynamics of
proteins and their complexes with specific substrates/inhibitors. A variety of
protein and nucleic acid systems produced synthetically and/ or by gene
expression methods are being investigated.

Biophysics, Structural Biology, Biomolecular NMR,
