Minutes of the Executive Council Meeting of the IBS - 2008 held at the Panjab University, Chandigarh on November 15, 2007

 

 

                                               

The meeting of the Executive Council of the Indian Biophysical Society was held at 1.00 p.m. on November 15, 2007 at the Panjab University, Chandigarh, during the National Symposium on Biophysics. The following members attended the meeting:

Prof. D. Chaterji, Prof. B. J. Rao, Dr. K. P. Mishra, Prof. P.B. Vidhyasagar, Dr. Sekhar Mande, Prof. E. Coutinho, Prof. B. P. Chatterjee, Prof. P. V. Balaji and Prof. Ashoke Thakur could not attend the meeting.

 

  1. At the outset, Prof. N. R. Jagannathan, President and Chair, welcomed the members of EC and the special invitees for the meeting. He congratulated Prof. Dhawan, Prof. Nandel and his colleagues for wonderfully arranging the IBS-2008.

 

  1. Minutes of the Executive Committee meeting of the Indian Biophysical Society (IBS-2007) held on 13th Feb 2007 at Indian National Science Academy (Room 105) at 2.00 pm were confirmed.

 

  1. Prof. Jagannathan shared the details of the guidelines (prepared in consultation with the EC and some of the past IBS-Presidents) prepared for the benefit of the organizers of future IBS-symposia. EC discussed the points in detail and unanimously agreed upon and approved the guidelines and opined that this will help the future organizer(s) to adhere to them.

 

  1. Prof. Jagannathan informed the committee that the next East Asian Biophysical Society (EABS) meeting will be held in Hong Kong in January 2009. It was decided that India will be represented by two members. One of them would be President of IBS and the other will be a senior IBS member which will be decided by the President of IBS along with the members of EC and others. Accordingly, for 2007-09, Prof. G. Govil and the President of IBS (Prof. N. R. Jagannathan) will represent India in the council (steering committee) of EABS.

 

  1. In presenting the Secretary’s report, Prof. Chary shared the following information with the members of EC:

 

    1. The IBS web-site (www.tifr.res.in/~ibs) is updated.
    2. The present strength of the IBS membership is 612.
    3. The entire Life Members’ Directory is updated as on November 11, 2007.
    4. Missing information: e-mail IDs and change of addresses (if any).
    5. Address Book is kept at the Symposium registration desk for incorporating any changes.
    6. The Minutes of the meetings of EC and GB held during IBS - 2007 are uploaded on the net.
    7. Awards page is put on the net.
    8. Membership Certificates: It has been proposed that all the members will receive IBS Membership ID card during IBS-2009 to be held at CCMB Hyderabad. (EC agreed to the proposal.)

 

  1. Prof. Jagannathan suggested that Prof Tom L. Blundell, the GNR Memorial Lecture speaker of IBS- 2007 be offered Honorary Membership of IBS. This was unanimously agreed upon by all the EC members.

 

  1. It was decided as per the earlier recommendation of EC of IBS, that the IBS-2009 meeting will be held at CCMB, Hyderabad, some time in Jan/Feb 2009. Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao of CCMB, Hyderabad has expressed readiness to coordinate IBS-2009 and the members agreed to his proposal. Prof. Jagannathan reiterated that the guidelines prepared for the benefit of future organizers be adhered to.

 

  1. Prof. S. Basak, Treasurer, IBS presented the accounts to EC. EC approved the same.

 

  1. It was bought to the notice of the EC that the Life membership fees will be enhanced immediately after the next EC and GB meetings in January 2009 to Rs 1000/- instead of the present Rs 500/-. EC discussed the issue and approved the same.

 

  1. Proposals for organizing IBS - 2010 will be discussed during the next EC meeting to be held during the IBS - 2009, which is scheduled to be held at CCMB, Hyderabad. Any institution or member interested to host the event is encouraged to submit their proposal to the President/Secretary of IBS.
