Introduction
The 2006 International Linear Collider Workshop (LCWS06) will be held at Bangalore, India under the aegis of World Wide Study for future Linear Colliders. These workshop-style conferences have been the main international fora for developing the physics case and reviewing detector designs and techniques for an electron-positron linear collider. History has guided us that lepton and hadron accelerators are complementary in the exploration of new physics frontiers. The world High Energy Physics community has reached an accord that a Linear Collider operating at 0.5-1.0 TeV would provide both unique and essential scientific opportunities; it has endorsed with highest priority the construction of such a machine. A major milestone towards this goal was the approval, by the International Committee on Future Accelerators (ICFA), of the recommendation of the International Technology Recommendation Panel (ITRP) for the technology of the future International Linear Collider (ILC).
Together with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the ILC would allow physicists to explore energy regions beyond the reach of today's accelerators. At these energies, researchers anticipate significant discoveries that will lead to a radically new understanding of what the universe is made of and how it works. The nature of the ILC's electron-positron collisions would give it the capability to answer compelling questions that discoveries at the LHC will raise, from the identity of dark matter to the existence of extra dimensions. The ILC Global Design Effort will establish the design of the ILC, focussing the efforts of hundreds of accelerator scientists and particle physicists in America, Europe and Asia. The ILC will be designed, funded, managed and operated as a fully international scientific project. An international effort will define the administrative and financial model for the project.
LCWS06 is organised by IISc, Bangalore (India). Further bulletins will provide information about the conference's background, organisers, topics, programme and preliminary registration information.
Venue and Dates
LCWS06 will be organised within the premises of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (India). The dates have been fixed from Thursday March 9, 2006 to Monday March 13, 2006.
Pre-registration will start from October 1, 2005. The conference fee for early registration will be US$ 250. Pre-registration is possible even after January 15, 2006 but then the registration fees will be US$ 300.
Registration will start on Wednesday March 8, 2006 afternoon at 14:00 until 20:00. Registration will also be possible on Thursday morning and each subsequent mornings for delegates who arrive later in the week.
The GDE will also meet concurrently and will be part of the LCWS06.
History
The Worldwide LCWS series which started at Saariselka, Finland in 1991 and has moved all over the world. LCWS06 is the ninth in the series and the previous eight workshops were held in
The first ILC workshop was held in November 13-15, 2004 at KEK. The GDE members met at Snowmass in the two week long Second ILC Workshop: Aug 13-27, 2005, which was coordinated with a two week Physics and Detectors ILC Workshop, hosted by the Americas.
Organisation
There is an International Advisory Committee setting the overall themes of the conference, a Programme Committee responsible for the content of the conference, a National and a Local Organising Committee responsible for the conference infrastructure.
Travel and Accommodation
Bangalore, the IT capital of India, is well connected to several major cities in the world and also to rest of India. The international and domestic airports of Bangalore are located roughly 20 km from the conference venue. The railway station is located approximately 10 km from IISc.
Details on accommodation will be given in the next bulletin. Arrangements are being made with some good hotels within 5 km from the conference venue. We are negotiating for some special rates for the conference delegates. There will be arrangements to transfer the delegates from the place of accommodation to IISc and back.
Conference Programme
LCWS06 will consist of plenary and parallel sessions on the physics and detectors for the ILC. A special feature of the LCWS to be held in Bangalore will be participation by the GDE. There exists the possibility of holding associated meetings for a day or two before or after the workshop. Contributions will be solicited in the form of abstracts and the Programme Committee, with the help of the International Advisory Committee, will use these to finalise the programme.
Social Programme
There will be a welcome reception on the evening of Thursday, March 9, 2006. Entrance to this will be included in the conference fees, as will entrance for the conference banquet to be held on Saturday, March 11, 2006.
