Department-Specific Evaluation Norms

In addition to the criteria imposed by the Subject Board, certain Departments may, if they wish, impose additional criteria, which shall be applicable specifically to all students in the specific Department.

The additional criteria are given below.

Dept. of Astronomy and Astrophysics (DAA)

Currently there are no additional criteria imposed by the DAA.

Dept.of Condensed Matter Physics and Material Science (DCMP&MS)

Currently there are no additional criteria imposed by the DCMP&MS.

Dept.of High Energy Physics (DHEP)

Currently there are no additional criteria imposed by the DHEP.

Dept.of Nuclear and Atomic Physics (DNAP)

Currently there are no additional criteria imposed by the DNAP.

Dept.of Theoretical Physics (DTP)

All students of the DTP, at the end of their First Year, shall, in addition to the Subject Board criteria for evaluation, have their performance evaluated by the calculation of a Restricted CPI, or RCPI. Rules for calculation of these are given in the box below.

The RCPI shall be calculated for all students of a given batch (i.e. in all Departments) who have completed 40 Credits or more, and if the DTP student in question is found to rank in the lower half of the batch by this RCPI, then he/she will have to appear before an Interview Board of 3-5 faculty members constituted by the Chair, DTP, to re-evaluate his/her grasp of basic subjects like Mathematical Methods, Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Classical Electrodynamics and Statistical Mechanics.

To determine the lower half of the batch, if there are 2n students in the batch, then a rank of (n+1) or more will be considered to lie in the lower half. If there are 2n+1 students in the batch, then a rank of (n+2) or more will be considered to lie in the lower half. In cases of tied RCPI, the student will get the benefit of the doubt.

If the report of the Interview Board is positive, the student may continue in his/her programme in DTP without prejudice. If the report of the Interview Board is negative, the DTP may recommend termination of the studentís academic programme to the Subject Board.

No record of the Interview or its results shall appear in the studentís transcript; however, a brief report of the Interview and the evaluation of the Interview Board will be submitted to the Subject Board for records.

Calculation of RCPI

The RCPI will be calculated using the formula

R

where is the marks secured in a course with Credits and both sums over n run exclusively over the following set of courses:

Int. M.Sc.Ph.D.

(100 Credits)

:

MM-1, CM-1, QM-1, ED-1,

COMP, SP-1, QM-2

Int. M.Sc.Ph.D.

(80 Credits)

:

CM-1, QM-1, ED-2,

COMP, SP-1, QM-2

Ph.D.

(60 Credits)

:

AQM/QM-2, ED-2,

COMP, SP-1

The RCPI shall be rounded off to the first decimal place.
