Premature Exit from TIFR

Any student in the Ph.D. or Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme

can at any time resign his/her position, obtain a ‘No Dues’

certificate and leave the Institute without a degree. Such a

student is normally allowed one month’s notice to vacate

his/her accommodation (if provided by TIFR). Normally, no

testimonial is permissible in case of such a resignation.

However, transfer of credits from coursework is permissible

if acceptable to some other academic institution.

A resigning student who wishes to obtain a degree against

time spent in TIFR can avail of one of the options below, as

appropriate.

Exit with M.Sc. (only Int. M.Sc.-Ph.D. students)

Students in the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme are normally

awarded the M.Sc. degree together with the Ph.D. degree at the

end of their academic tenure in TIFR.

However, a student in the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme,

who, at the end of his/her Second Year, cannot find a

Supervisor in his/her allotted Department, is permitted the

option of leaving TIFR with a M.Sc. degree.

The rules governing this exit option are as follows:

1.      This option is not open to those who already have an M.Sc. degree

in Physics.

2.      The student must give a written declaration at the end of his/her

4th semester that he/she wishes to avail of the exit option with

M.Sc. The form for this declaration can be found here.

In case the declaration is made at a later stage, the student’s

eligibility for the M.Sc. degree is not guaranteed, but will be

assessed on a case-by-case basis.

3.      Once this declaration is made, the student cannot revert back to

the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme.

4.      All the course work requirements for a normal M.Sc.-Ph.D.

Programme as applicable to the student must be satisfied.

5.      During the two semesters of his/her 3rd year, the student shall

register for an M.Sc. Project, which shall be in addition to

his/her Departmental Projects. At the close of the 3rd year,

the student must submit a written report and give a 45 minute

presentation of the M.Sc. Project work, which will be evaluated

by a Committee.

6.      The M.Sc. Project may be done in any Department.

7.      During the 3rd year, the student will be provided accommodation

by TIFR, but the Fellowship and Contingency Grant will revert to

the levels of the 1st year, viz. Fellowship of Rs. 16,000/- p.m. and

Contingency Grant of Rs. 20,000/- p.a.

In case exit with M.Sc. is permitted after a delayed declaration,

any extra salary given to such a student during the third year will

be adjusted/recovered accordingly before the M.Sc. degree can be

given.

8.      No extension of Fellowship or Contingency Grant beyond the

3rd year will be granted.

Exit with M.Phil. (only M.Sc. degree holders)

Students in the Ph.D. programme are normally awarded the Ph.D.

degree at the end of their academic tenure in TIFR.

However, a student in the Ph.D. programme, who, at the end of

his/her Second Year, cannot find a Supervisor in his/her allotted

Department, is permitted the option of leaving TIFR with an

M.Phil. degree.

This option may also be permitted on a case-to-case basis for

students at a later stage, provided the student has completed

a minimum residence requirement of 3 years

The rules governing this exit option are as follows:

1.      This option is open only to those who have an M.Sc. degree in

Physics, or to students of the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme

who have completed a minimum residence requirement of 3 years.

2.      The student must give a written declaration at the end of his/her

4th semester that he/she wishes to avail of the exit option with

M.Phil. The form for this declaration can be found here.

In case the declaration is made at a later stage, the student’s

eligibility for the M.Phil. degree is not guaranteed, but will be

assessed on a case-by-case basis.

3.      Once this declaration is made, the student cannot revert back to

the Ph.D. programme.

4.      All the course work requirements for a normal Ph.D.

Programme as applicable to the student must be satisfied.

5.      During the two semesters of his/her 3rd year, the student shall

register for an M.Phil. Thesis, which shall be in addition to

his/her Departmental Projects. At the close of the 3rd year, the

student must submit an M.Phil. Thesis which will be evaluated

in the same way as a Ph.D. thesis, except that only one external

(to TIFR) examiner is required.

6.      The M.Phil. Project may be done in any Department.

7.      Post-declaration, the student will be provided accommodation

by TIFR, but the Fellowship and Contingency Grant will revert to

the levels of the 1st year, viz. Fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- p.m. and

Contingency Grant of Rs. 32,000/- p.a.

8.      No extension of Fellowship or Contingency Grant beyond one year

after the date of declaration will be granted.
