The TIFR Grants Cell (TGC) has constituted under the chairmanship of Prof. K. Maiti, Dean NSF by the Director as per office order R29_2022-23 dated May 12, 2022.

The TGC aims to draw attention of Institute members and aid them in applying for external grants from Governmental, Private and Overseas sources. It will also provide advice and support within limits for liaison between grantees and the funding agencies.

Funding agencies are Government, or Non-government bodies providing monitory grants for basic scientific research areas. In India and overseas various funding agencies are available which provide grants for a research in various fields. These agencies conduct research schemes to promote the research by providing grants in science and medical stream research. Research funding is a term generally covering any funding for scientific research. It is a competitive process, in which potential research projects are evaluated and only the most promising receive funding. Such processes, which are run by government, corporations or foundations, allocate limited funds. Most research funding comes from two major sources – corporation’s research and development departments, and government through universities and government agencies. Some small amounts of scientific research are funded by charitable foundations also. Keeping these thoughts in mind, TGC is formed by the Director, to look for funding support towards basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science.
