At TIFR, research in all aspects of contemporary biology is undertaken across varied length-scales from the molecular to the living ecosystems. In order to accommodate these diverse interests, research activities are pursued in several nodes under the TIFR umbrella: the Main Campus in Mumbai at the Department of Biological Sciences, in Bengaluru at the National Center for Biological Sciences, and at the TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad. Additionally interspersed research on theoretical biology is pursued at the International Center for Theoretical Studies in Bengaluru.

Department of Biological Sciences, Mumbai

The Department of Biological Sciences strives to promote excellence in research at the frontiers of contemporary biology with an interdisciplinary approach and train high quality researchers. The faculty members are engaged in exploring some of the fundamental issues underlying the development of brain and epithelium, tissue dynamics, intracellular transport, physiology, and behavior.

National Center for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru

NCBS studies biology across scales, from molecules to ecosystems. We have six active areas whose boundaries are fluid as many scientists work across these areas. They are: biochemistry, biophysics and bioinformatics; genetics and development; cellular organization and signalling; neurobiology; ecology and evolution; and theory and modelling of biological systems.

TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad

TIFR Hyderabad faculty engage with scientists across disciplines to bring comprehensive approaches to the study of biological problems. From studying the aetiology of cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, immune disorders, metabolism and aging, to more physical science-oriented studies in mechanobiology, gene expression or super-resolution imaging of sensory systems, our interests span many domains of the Life Sciences. Structural Biology, with a special emphasis on the dynamics of biomolecules, in coordination with the other groups and centres of TIFR, is another area of particular interest.
