HBCSE is the premier institution in the country for research and development in science, technology and mathematics education. It is India's nodal center for Olympiad programmes in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy and junior science.

The broad goals of the Centre are to reach out to the public by constructing curricula that can be incorporated in the undergraduate-level degree coursework. We aim to promote quality and equity in science and mathematics education from primary school to introductory college levels, to support outstanding young people in achieving excellence in science and mathematics and to encourage the growth of scientific literacy in the country.
