The TIFR Archives is open to all researchers; a TIFR affiliation is not required. However, we assume that visitors to the Archives have consulted pertinent secondary material and are prepared to use primary sources. Scholars and other qualified researchers who do not have TIFR affiliation may apply in writing for access to the collections. All enquiries must be in writing and should state in full the researcher's purpose in consulting the Archives. In addition, supporting documents, such as a letter from PhD supervisor in case of PhD students, will be requested from the researcher. TIFR-affiliated researchers are requested to call in advance for an appointment. Completion of an application for access will be required prior to admission to the collections.

All foreign nationals visiting TIFR Archives are required to fill up a separate form and include affiliation and passport details for the Government of India clearance. Please do expect 3-4 weeks time for your application to be processed.

If you are planning a research visit, please contact us at least a fortnight in advance.

You may also register online and request for material. The archives staff will get back to you.

In case of documents and photographs (including photographs of paintings in the TIFR Collection) special charges will be applicable for publications, commercial use or exhibitions.

Archival material will be reproduced when it is not in violation of copyright laws or in violation of IPR (intellectual property rights) and when it is possible to do so without damaging the physical integrity of the item and taking into account the limited reproduction resources of the Archives.

All permission to use documents, images or sound recordings are granted on a one-time basis only. Any subsequent use of the material would require fresh permission.

Any material used by the researcher in publications in print or other forms, should acknowledge the TIFR Archives. The Archives would request the researcher to submit a copy of her/his work to the Archives on completion of the project.

Documents, images, sound-recordings, films, should not be altered in any way. Documents, images, sound-recordings, films, should not be duplicated, reproduced for resale, loaned to or deposited with another individual or repository without permission.
